Manga Review: To-Love-Ru(とらぶる)

The story is about Yuuki Rito, a high-school boy who cannot confess to the girl of his dreams, Sairenji Haruna. One day when coming home and sulking in the bath-tub a mysterious, nude girl, appears out of nowhere. Her name is Lala and she comes from the planet Deviluke, where she is the heir to the throne. Her father wants her to return to her home planet so she can marry one of the husband candidates, but she decides that she wants to marry Rito in order to stay on Earth.

STORY

The story and concept of To-Love-Ru sounds very similar to “Urusei Yatsura” right? A hot alien chick comes from out of nowhere and decides that she will marry a guy who she’s come to like down on earth.

Most of the series is just mindless fluff where Lala’s inventions go awry, which leads to comedic scenarios, such as Rito turning into a girl, the female cast losing their clothes, or their clothes change into some extremely skimpy costume. She’s even got devices which send everyone to completely different world where tons of crazy antics are bound to happen. And sometimes her little inventions bring crap to life like trees, and she’s even got little robot. She’s got way to many of her little gadgets on hand. But they often lead to nice light side-stories and adventures.

Since this is a harem afterall, there’s going to be some “harem antics” and “romantic developments” right? While there are tons of harem antic like Rito falling into a girls chest, getting a nice few of someone’s panties, and even bathing with them, there isn’t too much romantic development. Some probably read my review on the final two chapters of the series, there was a bit there, but the Rito didn’t get to confess to Haruna fully, but he managed to tell Lala that he love her as well as Haruna(which leads to her suggesting he start a polygamy…). But when you think about the type of series To-Love-Ru is, you can’t really and definitely shouldn’t expect much in the way when it comes to romance. But the tsundere of our series and my favorite character) Yui got a small bit of development between her and Rito, and it’s rather obvious she’s got it in for him. However, many of the other girls(excluding Haruna) rarely ever got to spend some time “alone” with Rito and got to develop feelings for him, except for maybe his sister Mikan and Yami-chan.

But  To-Love-Ru is nothing deep or keeps you thinking about your existence in the world. It’s just a harem-comedy and fanservice filled manga, which if done right is a WIN in my book. And the characters are pretty likeable as well.

FANSERVICE

If there was one thing To-Love-Ru definitely know how to do besides comedy, it’s probably offering up gracious amounts and at times, tasteful, fanservice. With this being a Shounen Harem series, you can definitely expect a truck-load of fanservice, which To-Love-Ru undoubtably has. Despite being a shounen series, To-Love-Ru often goes from normal to all out ero fanservice as demonstrated by the actual complied manga volumes(which add nipple exposure and get de-steamed sometimes as a “bonus”). And I have to say, the female characters have some nice bodies, some of them are OVEREXAGGERATED but at least Yabuki know how to draw a body “correctly”. Besides the typical fanservice you can find in pretty much every series, To-Love-Ru also offers some fetish fanservice, ranging from tentacle Raep to maids, to hadaka aprons, and  to pretty much every wierd fetish I can think of.

Fanservice is definitely this series strength!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Like I’ve mentioned before, To-Love-Ru is nothing complicated or amazing, but the fanservice and comedy hold  up well. I can’t belive I haven’t even mentioned the art, which is also worthy of some praise. But anyways…I would recommend this series to most unless you absolutely hate fanaservice series…so go for this series if you enjoy ecchi and comedy~ but don’t watch the anime, watch the OVAs instead.
