Letter Bee – 20

Lag returns to the Bee Hive to hear news of Zazie being injured from an attack by the Gaichuu on his delivery. Most Letter Bees usually take the long way around the Hart Desert since it is full of Gaichuu territories, but Zazie always chooses to take the dangerous shortcut. Moc Sullivan explains to Lag that it is because Zazie prefers killing Gaichuu to delivering letters, which is how he is able to throw away the letters in order to escape from the Gaichuu. Lag later gets entrusted with completing the task when he is caught unintentionally eavesdropping on Aria questioning Zazie with regards to the whereabouts of the missing letters and details of the Gaichuu, since they have to retrieve and deliver the letters so as to maintain the public’s trust in them.

Lag comes under attack by the same Gaichuu when he finds the letters in Hart Desert, and is shocked to learn that his shindan fails to work on the Gaichuu. Thankfully, Zazie, who has escaped from the infirmary, comes to his aid and they manage to retrieve the letters. Lag starts to doubt Zazie’s suitability as a Letter Bee when the latter refuses to leave and is determined to destroy the Gaichuu, but his shindan reveals that Zazie’s determination to retrieve the letter is what led to him being injured in the first place. Both Lag and Zazie then fire their shindan at the Gaichuu and destroy it. After the delivery, Zazie pays a visit to the Bread and Weapons shop-owner as previously promised and smiles as he thinks of how he has maintained Lag’s faith in Letter Bees.

I can’t even pretend to be enthusiastic about this series anymore when there’s no Gauche.

Nonetheless, overall, this is a pretty good episode that explores more in depth into Zazie’s character, and shows that while he still bears a vengeance for Gaichuu, he is indeed a true Letter Bee in that the importance of delivering the letters safely comes before anything else. It is really admirable and awesome of him, but on the other hand, I kind of wish that he isn’t such a good person, only because I get annoyed at how it keeps Lag innocent and naive. I am hoping for something to strip him of his unwavering belief in the good of people, because the real world is never like that.

Nevermind, it’s just me. I should go re-watch Kino no Tabi, or continue with my Galaxy Express 999…

PS: Looks like more flashbacks of Gauche and Thunderland Jr. and a woman next week!
